TIME Magazine’s Interview of Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

  1. Why Islam is so strongly associated with terrorism?
  1. This is true that some Muslims are engaged in terrorist activities in the name of Islam. But their terrorism has nothing to do with Islam. It is Islam’s misuse, not proper use. You will have to differentiate between Muslims and Islam.

Basic reason for present Muslims’ engagement in violence is to be traced in their backwardness in modern education. Due to this lacking they are not consciously aware of the modern democratic method. Educational backwardness has rendered them into a case of anachronism.

So far Islam is concerned, it is entirely a peaceful religion. The Qur’an clearly states that ‘God calls you to the home of peace’ (10:25). Terrorism is totally unlawful in Islam. One of the attributes of a believer finds expression in these words in the Qur’an: ‘they enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience (103:3). This means that the task of religion is to be performed by adhering to patience in full.

In fact Islamic activism is peaceful activism, or non-violent activism in the full sense of the word, violent activism is in no way permitted in Islam.

Fighting is allowed in Islam in particular circumstances alone, i.e. when one has been left with no option but to fight in defense. The Qur’an states: "Fight for the sake of God those that fight against you, but do not be aggressive. God does not love the aggressors" (2:190).

Moreover, the permission to enter into a war is only for the State and not for the individuals. However, even the State is not permitted to wage a war in aggression. Besides even when another nation initiates hostilities on the Muslim State, it will first of all opt for all possible ways to avoid taking up arms. As Qur’an says: Reconciliation is the best policy (4:128). War in Islam is allowed only in unavoidable circumstances, it is never allowed in normal conditions.

  1. If terrorism is against the teachings of Islam why it is that Islamic scholars and Muslim leaders do not openly condemn it.
  1. Just out of fear. If they dare to condemn it openly they will find their names among the hit list of the terrorists. Some do not take stand against the terrorists for fear of losing popularity among the masses, while others out of fear for being enlisted among the hit list.
  1. Are you worried for figuring on the hit list?
  1. Absolutely not. I have a sound sleep daily. You know, the greatest joy to be found in this world is to have the conviction that one stands on truth. And I am in possession of this joy, by the grace of God. Then why do I need to worry.
  1. To the present day Muslims who opt for terrorism to achieve their goals, what alternative Islam offers them to achieve their goals.
  1. According to Islam, the alternative to them is to completely shun political confrontation and violence, and then whatever opportunities are still available to them, must be availed through peaceful means. In this regards the Qur’an states: With every difficulty there is relief (94:5). That is to say, opportunities always exist side by side with problems. Hence the formula of Islam is: Ignore the problems, avail the opportunities.
